The Many-Faceted Life of Lavender: Seasonal Allergies

A few Springs ago we made a trip to South Georgia to visit family. Now, being a resident of the Memphis, Tennessee area I am well acquainted with seasonal allergies; but nothing had prepared me for the sneezing, itchy eyes, and total discomfort of the allergy season I encountered there. Nothing at all!

As a reflexologist, I know the value of reflexology for helping to relieve allergy symptoms. Alas, I did not have one available to me. Young Living Essentials Oils, however, are also a big part of my life. Of course, I had a goody bag full of these with me. I had heard others say that lavender on the back of the neck just above the hairline often often provided them great relief. Guess what? I tried it! It worked!! And I used it ALOT!!!

Lavender is often nicknamed the "Swiss Army Knife" of essential oils, because of its many-faceted benefits. I had often used a drop or two on my pillow as a sleep aid. I knew its potential effectiveness for helping to heal burns and skin irritations (diluted please). The benefits list goes on and on.

With Spring a great time of renewal we expect the pollens in the air. A bottle of lavender in your medicine cabinet (or better yet, in your purse or backpack) may be a perfect natural choice for you. If you would like to learn more about lavender essential oil, please leave a message here on the blog. I would love to share more.

Just as an afterword here, I've also planted some lavender in my herb garden. Looking forward to some lovely fragrant flowers later this summer.

What's Growing in Your Herb Garden?

April 15th -- a well marked day on most all calendars at least here in The U.S. Tax Day! In the Memphis, TN area it marks an important day for gardeners as well. It is usually considered the safe date for the last frost to be past. Veggies, flowers, and herbs may be safely planted.

New growth belongs to Footsteps In Eden Reflexology's Spring renewal focus in the month of April. My thoughts have turned to an herb garden in a small prepared bed in my backyard. I'm eager to begin and even spent a little time this weekend to clean out some of it and discover a few new sprouts from last year's endeavors. I've also spent a little time investigating cultivation of herbs and have found a couple articles to share with my readers.

The first gives some basic information for planting herbs. It is found at The Tasteful Garden. The second -- and this one may be quite helpful to many of us -- discusses 10 things not to do with an herb garden. I'm perfectly willing to learn from another's mistakes. I'm including it here for you, too. It is found at The Skinny Gourmet. She grows her herbs on a fire escape in Chicago.

Where will you grow your herbs and what will you plant? I'm considering several herbs, and also some edible flowers. For those in the Memphis, TN area, the Memphis Botanic Garden Spring Plant Sale is this coming weekend -- Friday and Saturday, April 19th and 20th. Check their link in this paragraph to learn more. I know there will be lots of choices and lots of folks with 'sage' advice (pun intended) for those who would like to learn more. See you there!

By the way, I have found those poles for my front yard garden and will be ordering them this week. They are actually willow poles made into a planting sort of "tee-pee." Looking forward to my little piece of the garden world this summer.

Water with Lemon -- Are there Benefits?

Footsteps in Eden Reflexology is spending the month of April focusing on cleansing. Some aspect of this topic will show up each week this month as we prepare our weekly email communication with our clients. A recent challenge faced by a family member has me looking at the various cleansing options of which I am aware. Water with lemon is a common one, and one I believe may have some definite benefits for improving digestion and encouraging bodies toward a more alkaline state.

Rather than rehash it all here, I'm suggesting this link: Energize Alkaline Diet Blog. This blog writer has covered the subject thoroughly. Venture over there and learn much about alkalinizing the body, which may result in increased health and wellness.

High pH water is suggested. Last summer I discovered the BioCerra water system and invested in a filtering pitcher that enhances water with electrolytes and increased alkalinity. I have no vested interest in this product except to say that my family and clients have had the opportunity to benefit from the quality water it provides, and you and your family may as well. You will find this pitcher available at KHT Systems.

Enriching Home Cleaning with Essential Oils

Connie Scheel, a two time cancer survivor enjoying remission today, believes she has enhanced her life and her health by choosing many complementary and alternative approaches for herself and her family. I've invited her to share some of her story below along with recipes for simple, effective, and cost-effective recipes for green and healthy cleaning products created with Young Living essential oils. She would enjoy hearing your feedback. Please leave comments. You may learn more about Connie and the Young Living oils by visiting her on her Facebook page -- Catalysts to Connie's Wellness.

Do you want it all when it comes to Spring cleaning? Perhaps quick, easy, inexpensive, pleasantly fresh smelling cleaning products that are anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-septic and anti-fungal without any harsh chemicals? Therapeutic grade essential oils offer all of this along with a boost to the immune system and mood.
This may sound nerdy but I was really excited and relieved when I discovered 2 simple cleanser recipes that use essential oils.
I’m a two time gynecologic cancer Survivor enjoying 2 years and 4 months of Remission. Essential oils and I met shortly after my last chemo treatment. My body was suffering the side effects of chemo. My knees were extremely sore and my feet were numb. I was only 36, but struggled to walk, move and sleep. I was often exhausted yet fought insomnia and anxiety. My reflexologist friend suggested I try peppermint essential oil. I welcomed the suggestion since the medications my oncologist had prescribed to bring my relief only caused more side effects. Therapeutic grade peppermint essential oil delivered quick relief from my knee pain, brought feeling back to my feet, and nurtured my energy back. And I never have to worry about side effects as there aren’t any!
Then came therapeutic grade Lavender. Sweet, multi-talented Lavender. It lulled my body into blissful sleep and my anxiety faded. I became more intrigued with essential oils as my body and Soul healed from treatment, and so I began studying them. I was hungry to learn of more ways to use them to enrich my life.
Lavender comes from the Latin word lavare which means ‘to wash’. The Ancient Romans recognized lavender for it’s healing, antiseptic and cleansing properties. In 16th Century France it was regarded as an effective defense against infection. And it was used to dress wounds during WWI. Lavender is the most versatile essential oil, and is an adaptogen which means it literally aids in restoring overall balance to our bodies. It’s also well known for it’s relaxing properties. Lavender helps to restore emotional balance and soothes your nervous system. What an incredible combo!
My studies of essential oils also brought me lessons in the dangers of many of the cleaning and personal care products in my home. If you’re curious, check out this article from Organic Consumer Alert- How Toxic Are Your Household Cleaning Supplies? I was shocked, and had an urgent need to find an inexpensive, quick but very effective ways to clean my home.
So, cleaning with therapeutic grade essential oils became a life enriching experience for me. It’s allowed me to remove toxic and harmful chemicals from my life while make cleaning an immune system boosting adventure. I hope it will for you, too.
All Purpose Anti-Everything-Bad & Mood Boosting Cleaning Spray
12-16  oz spray bottle
1 cup white vinegar
Add water, fill almost of the top
Add 10 Drops of Young Living Lavender Essential Oil
For a stronger degreasing cleaner solution replace the 10 drops of Lavender essential oil with 5 drops of YL Lavender essential oil and 5 drops of Young Living’s Orange essential oil.
Gently shake to mix.
Kitchen and Bathroom Essential Oil Scrub
Fantastic for tubs, sinks, countertops
Empty clean, perhaps recycled, 12- 16 ounce glass jar with a tight lid
Fill the jar 3/4s full with baking soda (or Super Washing Soda for even more cleaning power)
Add 10 drops of Young Living’s Lavender essential oil
Gently shake to mix.

Front Yard Gardening... What We're Planning this Summer

(Photo from Front Yard Farmer website.)

Front yard gardening has created quite a buzz and a stir in recent years. Some neighborhoods and communities have tried to stop homeowners from cultivating well maintained vegetable plants and berry bushes in their front yards (and sometimes the back yard, too) while nearby grass yards sometimes left to go to weeds and neglect, were considered quite acceptable. Seems rather a silly argument in the day when we are all looking for healthier options for our families.

"Tennessee Home & Farm" (a publication for members of the TN Farm Bureau)  Spring 2013 issue featured front yard garden ideas. You too may visit the featured farmer's website/business. This really captured my attention. I believe you will be seeing a bit of this incorporated in our yard this year. While my herbs thrived quite well in the partial shade of our backyard, veggies didn't fare so well.

We were offered the option of a stake in a community garden, but we believe we are a bit short in the equipment and time categories to keep that going. From my adventures around websites featuring front yard gardening, a couple ideas have stood out to me as a starting point for our home. So, on to our front yard garden adventure. I've included several links below. As you browse through them, I hope you discover some great options for yourself as well.

Be looking for some bamboo tepees in our front flower bed.  (Does anyone know where we can find these bamboo poles (8-10 ft) in Memphis?) Well assembled, I believe they will be nice architectural features in the garden. They will offer support for tomato vines and beans. (I see them in the winter featuring Christmas lights and trims lending festivity to the landscape.) I've also discovered some elevated rolling veggie beds -- practical and aesthetically quite appealling. (These are pictured in the photo above.) However, they may have to wait until next year's expansion plans. You'll find more great projects like this at The Front Yard Farmer's website

I would love to add some beautiful blueberry bushes, too; but, be assured, for the most part our yard will remain green (and brown) and inedible. I'm praying for a bumper crop on the small portion we devote to food.

So, you're not into gardening, but you would like to serve your family fresh fruits and veggies, support local farmers, and find sustainably grown varieties -- organic when possible. I would like to finish this article, then by sharing with you the options for local farmers' markets and food co-ops. We are so thankful their excellence in delivering fresh locally grown selections -- some of them organic, as well. Our little front yard garden adventure will certainly not provide all the fresh produce we would like, and we will be taking advantage of the offerings from these as well. Many of the markets will begin to open in early April. The co-ops are ongoing. And while we are speaking garden here, please know that you will also find some excellent choices in meat and seafood at some of these locations. You may know of others in Memphis to add to this list. Please do so in the comments!

Green Facts -- Celebrating St. Patrick

This month of March at Footsteps in Eden Reflexology we have our focus on green -- green living, green celebrating, green facts, just plain green! It just seems appropriate for the month that celebrates St. Patrick. This blog post will share a few of the fun facts we've discovered about St. Patty, the Irish, and Clover. Our sole purpose for you to just ENJOY!!

So as we celebrate green, the first interesting fact we're choosing to share:
The actual color of St. Patrick is BLUE. GREEN became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow. (Sounds a bit -- or maybe even a whole lot superstitious to me -- but a fun fact none-the-less.)

In Chicago the Chicago River is dyed green for St. Patrick's Day (with green vegetable dye).

Lucky Charms, a favorite cereal brand among many, young and old, was created in 1963, with its popular mascot, Lucky the Leprechaun. Its jig is a memorable tune for many, including the young at heart.
Hearts, Stars, and Horseshoes
Clovers and Blue moons
Pots of gold and rainbows,
And the red balloon

That's the luck of me lucky charms!
Their magically delicious!

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the highest number of leaves found on a clover is 14.

The harp is the symbol of Ireland. The color green is also commonly associated with Ireland, also known as "The Emerald Isle."

On a more serious note:

After more than six years as a prisoner, Patrick escaped. According to his writing, a voice -- which he believed to be God's -- spoke to him in a dream, telling him it was time to leave Ireland. To do so, Patrick walked nearly 200 miles from County Mayo, where it is believed he was held, to the Irish coast. (Anyone else agree this many seriously could have used some reflexology?)

Patrick began preaching the Gospel throughout Ireland, converting many. He and his disciples preached and converted thousands and began building churches all over the country. Kings, their families, and entire kingdoms converted to Christianity when hearing Patrick's message.

Patrick was a humble, pious, gentle man, whose love and total devotion to and trust in God should be a shining example to each or us. He feared nothing, not even death, so complete was his trust in God, and of the importance of his mission.

We learned these facts by visiting the websites below. Be sure to check them out for yourself to learn more about this man's fascinating life and the land where he lived.

Reflexology for Fall Allergies

It's Fall! In this reflexologist/writer's humble opinion, the most beautiful season of the year. Many of  you would agree. It's also a season of sneezing, dripping sinuses, itchy eyes, stuffy nose, etc, due to seasonal allergies. Sure does put a damper on enjoying the beautiful sunny and crisp autumn days. What triggers these Fall allergies and where do you turn for relief?

While many medications are available to treat the symptoms of allergy challenges, the root cause of those symptoms are not addressed by the meds.

Web MD says the following about those root causes and triggers of Fall allergies:
Male plants release tiny cells called pollen into the air in order to reproduce. When these pollen or other allergy triggers get into the noses of certain people, their immune system mistakenly sees them as foreign invaders and releases antibodies -- substances that normally identify and go after bacteria, viruses, and other illness-causing organisms. The antibodies attack the allergens, which leads to the release of chemicals called histamines into the blood. Histamines trigger the runny nose, itchy eyes, and other symptoms of allergies.
Dust mites and mold spores are also mentioned as seasonal culprits and have the same effects.

May well be your reflexologist is just the place to turn for relief from your challenges. Therapeutic reflexology addresses these root causes as it works to bring all systems of the body into better harmony, while assisting the cleansing of toxins from the body. Besides the seemingly obvious reflexes of the sinuses themselves, your reflexologist will know other key reflex areas on the feet and hands where extra focus is indicated, including the lymphatic system to help with the removal of the histamines/toxins from your body. The reflexologist who also has knowledge of the use of essential oils may include these to further encourage the body's recovery.

Seasonal allergies are a major challenge in the Memphis, TN, area where I am located. Within my own practice (Footsteps In Eden Reflexology)  it is most common to hear clients (who often have not even mentioned their clogged sinuses or itchy eyes) comment on the relief they are suddenly feeling with their breathing or calming of sinus irritation during a session. The testimonial evidence I see in  my practice every day for allergy symptoms and relief of so many other health challenges as well, remind me over and over of the miraculous way in which God created our bodies. It is always amazing how -- while He certainly is able to act on His own without help -- He uses skilled and caring, gentle touch to enhance the body's ability to return to a state of harmony and wellness.

For those who may not be blessed to have access to a professional reflexologist, and for those who would like to assist themselves with sinus symptoms even more between sessions with their reflexologist, there are some simple self-help things you may do. Here is one from Livestong's website:
Hand reflexology can be an effective self-help method for alleviating allergy symptoms. Clear your sinuses by applying gentle pressure to the tips of your fingers just below the nail. Hold each finger for a few seconds until you begin to feel relief.

Green Facts for Footsteps In Eden Reflexology

Does Footsteps In Eden Reflexology in Bartlett, TN, have eco-friendly practices, and what are they? While I have been pondering a blog post on this topic for awhile now, I was smacked in the face with it this morning as I was registering my business with Angie's List. That was a 'surprise' question to me in that 'setting,' but a great one as well to make me think how to answer. Kudos to Angie's List for asking!

First of all, don't you just love the green footprint?!?! How perfect to find that little jewel for a post on eco-practices in my reflexology business. Just love it! Now on to what Footsteps In Eden Reflexology does do to be green.

  • Just the very nature of reflexology makes it a VERY GREEN business. There's really nothing actually required for this therapy except a client and a reflexologist's hands (OK, they will need to be attached to the reflexologist - LOL).
  • I work from my home. Situated in a park like setting, it is surrounded by GREEN.
  • Products that are organic and sustainably produced are used whenever possible. These include, but are not limited to lotions and aromatherapy essential oils.
  • Paper waste is greatly minimized by reusable linens and hand towels.
  • All linens are laundered with eco-friendly products.
  • The Thieves® line of products from Young Living,* provides anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti-fungal protection for cleaning routines, personally and within the space. Thieves® products are all natural and plant-based, with no added toxic ingredients.
  • Recently, we invested in a BioCerra pitcher. This allows us to provide our clients with filtered high pH, electrolyte added water in their own cup or a biodegradable to go cup. This is allowing us to eliminate the use of plastic water bottles.
  • Our space is located where heat and air are only used when necessary for clients' comfort, saving precious energy resources.
Do you have suggestions for more green ideas we might use? We would love to hear about them.

*Use "Thieves" as your search term on this website to learn much about these wonderful products.

Question 3 in Our Birthday Blessings GiveAway

At Footsteps In Eden Reflexology we offer . . . well . . . REFLEXOLOGY! Those of you who choose regular reflexology sessions as part of your health & wellness plan as well as those of you who sought it out for specific health challenges all have a story to tell about how reflexology has helped you in your life. I was asked on a talk show a couple of nights ago to share some of the dramatic things I had seen happen through reflexology. I shared a few that came to mind. I know all of you have great stories to share.

So, question #3 and another opportunity to perhaps recieve our wonderful Relaxation Give Away Package: Limiting yourself to just one thing (:-)that will be tough, of course), what would you say is the most dramatic single benefit you have received from reflexology?

For those reading this who have not yet experienced this amazing modality, it will be tough for you to answer this one. Gift yourself with that opportunity and learn for yourself what reflexology has to offer for you. In the Memphis area, we would love to hear from you and help you on your journey of discovery into reflexology. Begin by visiting our website.

2nd Question! Your Answer/Comment is Another Opportunity in Our Give Away

We continue in this month of counting blessings and thankfulness with our celebration of Footsteps In Eden Reflexology's 4th Birthday.

From our very beginning, Footsteps In Eden chose to offer you way more than a reflexology "session." Our goal was to offer you an experience of delight for all the senses. We appeal to your sense of smell through the use of aromatherapy. In our case, high quality therapeutic grade essential oils from Young Living.  Did you know that of all of our senses, the sense of smell is the only one where we react first and think about our response later? Something to think about, but not the question for today.

So, the question is, what is your favorite essential oil, how do you use it, and why?

To familiarize yourself with essential oils and their benefits, begin your journey of discovery here.

Peace on Earth and in Your Holiday Celebrations!

Tranquility is life to the body." Proverbs 14:30

Peace on Earth. . .A major holiday theme, but often our lives are anything but peaceful during this very busy season of celebration. Running from shopping to cooking to entertaining to travel to parties to decorating and perhaps gift making as well we are often out of steam, stressed, and on edge.

The meaning of the season is almost sure to be lost. Add to that, stress is a major factor in 90% plus of all the dis-eases of our bodies. King Solomon shared the avove quote thousands of years ago. How true it is.  Is it time to take a closer look at those todo lists and calendar apps, and make the time to minimize your holiday stress and maximize your enjoyment of the holiday?

Reflexology's number 1 benefit  is stress reduction. With reduced stress, of course, healing on many levels has opportunity to take place in your body  Footsteps in Eden Reflexology has created a haven for you to spend 30-75 minutes totally relaxing, allowing a treat for all of your senses and an encouragement of your body toward greater balance and wellness.

In the Memphis area, give us a call today. 901-674-3934. Choose a short respite from your many to-dos.

Wishing you Peace on Earth... and in Your Holiday Celebrations!

Staying Healthy with Thieves®

We've had a few cooler days, the kids are back in school in many areas of the country, and you may have thought about fighting germs and colds and flu bugs in the months ahead.

In our home we have found the Thieves® line of products from Young Living™ to be most helpful. We clean with it, we diffuse it, we wash with it and more. My clients often comment on the fresh and clean fragrance of my hand soap. It is diffused at my husband's office. While not everyone there may be in agreement about its effectiveness, the fact that when it runs out they ask for more, speaks for itself. The purse sprays are a healthy option for spraying shopping cart handles, and use in public restrooms. There is also toothpaste, mouthwash and hand sanitizers -- all made with wholesome, good-for-you ingredients. Thieves® has also been shown to be highly effective in removing mold and mold spores. Here's a little history of this great line. It just may surprise you to learn of its origins.

"A blend of highly antiviral, antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-infectious essential oils,  Thieves® was created from research of a group of 15th-century thieves who rubbed oils on themselves to avoid contracting the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead and dying. When apprehended, these thieves disclosed the formula of herbs, spices, and oils they used to protect themselves in exchange for more lenient punishment."

The entire Thieves® line is available at www.richinoils.com, where you have the opportunity to learn much more about the high potential of therapeutic grade essential oils.

Really Seeing

Being aware of our senses and their benefits to us as we explore the world around us is a really big deal. A few blog posts and many days moving into weeks ago I share a post about discovering our senses and promised to share more. My plans were temporarily derailed. Back again, intending to expand on the subject.

As I recall building imaginary walls around myself to protect myself from the many pains of my childhood, I wonder how much of the world around me I really missed seeing. Really seeing. It was so easy to stick my nose in a book and escape on someone else's adventure than it was to participate in many of my own. I remember my mother encouraging me to look at "all the beautiful scenery." An invitation I often ignored.

With all the mental details flying through my mind, it often requires intentional effort to "take it all in." I've done much better with this, but it still amazes me at how easily I can have tunnel vision, drive down the street with my mind engaged elsewhere and miss everything. I'm believing I am not alone here. Our hurry up world with its super-sized demands on our time and attention can be an incredibly large distraction for taking time to view the details and beauty of the creation and the created all around us.

How do you make time to see this happen in your life? (pun intended)

Cumulative Benefits of Reflexology

How often do you recommend that I schedule my reflexology appointments?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions from clients. You may have asked it yourself. Rather than offer the "one size fits all" answer, here are some reasons for considering the cumulative effect of reflexology for your personal health and wellness goals.

Health challenges are often a part of life for months and even years -- often many years. When clients choose weekly or bi-weekly sessions, and make these a priority over a span of months and in some cases years, they often experience amazing results. (Some sessions may bring nearly indiscernible baby steps. Other times the client is amazed at the dramatic changes.) By allowing their whole being to enter that deep state of relaxation on a regular basis they encourage their whole body toward greater health and wellness for a lifetime.

Sometimes new clients "try" a few sessions over 6 or 8 weeks time expecting to see significant results for their long-term challenges. They become disappointed and choose to stop with reflexology. From experiences in my practice, I know that those with the most awesome stories to share are those who have chosen to continue regular sessions for months and longer, believing that positive changes are occurring within their body. Ultimately, they are most often rewarded with enhanced health and wellness.

New energy patterns are introduced into the body through reflexology. These are helping to bring all systems of the body into greater balance and strengthening the immune system. Consistent regular sessions help to maintain this enhanced state of health. I have some clients who consider regular reflexology to be their "health plan." They report such great benefits that their body knows when it has missed even one session.

Reflexologists do not diagnose or treat for disease. They do not prescribe or adjust medications. Please consult with your medical professional for your health challenges and concerns.

Several years ago I finally began to come to my senses -- or at least to begin to pay more attention to these five enormous assets. With an often painful home life and being  somewhat of a curiosity in my family growing up, I learned to tune out -- well -- almost everything. It was my survival mode. I've learned this great talent is not necessarily my best friend.

Our five senses -- seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching -- are so important in our discovery of life around us, and our overall well-being. A few days ago I posted a link on my Facebook page, briefly outlining using our five senses to recharge. Intrigued by this article because of my personal experiences and light bulb moments, I believed the article would touch others as well.

The article quickly skimmed the surface. In the next several blog posts I choose to be transparent with you, my readers, sharing my story of learning to experience and value the senses more deeply. By sharing, I pray your life my be enhanced as well.

Guest Post on Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis – What is it all about?

By guest blogger: Jen Froggatt

If I was to say to you that hypnosis could help you relax and de-stress, you would think of watch being swayed side to side and being told, 'you are getting very sleepy', am I right? Well you couldn't be further from the truth. Although hypnotherapy is a relatively new therapy, many have been using it as a relaxation technique for years.

Hypnotherapy works by communicating with your subconscious mind, to help you overcome negative thought patterns which in turn helps you to relax. A qualified hypnotherapist will help you achieve a deeply relaxed state (different to sleep) before starting your hypnotherapy session so you can use your full imagination.  Many compare this state as being in a daydream.

Hypnosis for stress can be very effective because hypnotherapy can help alter your reactions to possible stressful situations. A hypnotherapist can change your thought pattern so when faced with these situations you have a much more positive reaction. This is because it is not the situation that causes stress (otherwise everyone would be stressed about the same thing at the same time) it's the way we react to this situation that causes stress. When you are less stressed you will then find easier to relax and wind down at the end of the day.
