What's Growing in Your Herb Garden?

April 15th -- a well marked day on most all calendars at least here in The U.S. Tax Day! In the Memphis, TN area it marks an important day for gardeners as well. It is usually considered the safe date for the last frost to be past. Veggies, flowers, and herbs may be safely planted.

New growth belongs to Footsteps In Eden Reflexology's Spring renewal focus in the month of April. My thoughts have turned to an herb garden in a small prepared bed in my backyard. I'm eager to begin and even spent a little time this weekend to clean out some of it and discover a few new sprouts from last year's endeavors. I've also spent a little time investigating cultivation of herbs and have found a couple articles to share with my readers.

The first gives some basic information for planting herbs. It is found at The Tasteful Garden. The second -- and this one may be quite helpful to many of us -- discusses 10 things not to do with an herb garden. I'm perfectly willing to learn from another's mistakes. I'm including it here for you, too. It is found at The Skinny Gourmet. She grows her herbs on a fire escape in Chicago.

Where will you grow your herbs and what will you plant? I'm considering several herbs, and also some edible flowers. For those in the Memphis, TN area, the Memphis Botanic Garden Spring Plant Sale is this coming weekend -- Friday and Saturday, April 19th and 20th. Check their link in this paragraph to learn more. I know there will be lots of choices and lots of folks with 'sage' advice (pun intended) for those who would like to learn more. See you there!

By the way, I have found those poles for my front yard garden and will be ordering them this week. They are actually willow poles made into a planting sort of "tee-pee." Looking forward to my little piece of the garden world this summer.

Green Facts for Footsteps In Eden Reflexology

Does Footsteps In Eden Reflexology in Bartlett, TN, have eco-friendly practices, and what are they? While I have been pondering a blog post on this topic for awhile now, I was smacked in the face with it this morning as I was registering my business with Angie's List. That was a 'surprise' question to me in that 'setting,' but a great one as well to make me think how to answer. Kudos to Angie's List for asking!

First of all, don't you just love the green footprint?!?! How perfect to find that little jewel for a post on eco-practices in my reflexology business. Just love it! Now on to what Footsteps In Eden Reflexology does do to be green.

  • Just the very nature of reflexology makes it a VERY GREEN business. There's really nothing actually required for this therapy except a client and a reflexologist's hands (OK, they will need to be attached to the reflexologist - LOL).
  • I work from my home. Situated in a park like setting, it is surrounded by GREEN.
  • Products that are organic and sustainably produced are used whenever possible. These include, but are not limited to lotions and aromatherapy essential oils.
  • Paper waste is greatly minimized by reusable linens and hand towels.
  • All linens are laundered with eco-friendly products.
  • The Thieves® line of products from Young Living,* provides anti-bacterial, anti-septic, anti-fungal protection for cleaning routines, personally and within the space. Thieves® products are all natural and plant-based, with no added toxic ingredients.
  • Recently, we invested in a BioCerra pitcher. This allows us to provide our clients with filtered high pH, electrolyte added water in their own cup or a biodegradable to go cup. This is allowing us to eliminate the use of plastic water bottles.
  • Our space is located where heat and air are only used when necessary for clients' comfort, saving precious energy resources.
Do you have suggestions for more green ideas we might use? We would love to hear about them.

*Use "Thieves" as your search term on this website to learn much about these wonderful products.

Question 3 in Our Birthday Blessings GiveAway

At Footsteps In Eden Reflexology we offer . . . well . . . REFLEXOLOGY! Those of you who choose regular reflexology sessions as part of your health & wellness plan as well as those of you who sought it out for specific health challenges all have a story to tell about how reflexology has helped you in your life. I was asked on a talk show a couple of nights ago to share some of the dramatic things I had seen happen through reflexology. I shared a few that came to mind. I know all of you have great stories to share.

So, question #3 and another opportunity to perhaps recieve our wonderful Relaxation Give Away Package: Limiting yourself to just one thing (:-)that will be tough, of course), what would you say is the most dramatic single benefit you have received from reflexology?

For those reading this who have not yet experienced this amazing modality, it will be tough for you to answer this one. Gift yourself with that opportunity and learn for yourself what reflexology has to offer for you. In the Memphis area, we would love to hear from you and help you on your journey of discovery into reflexology. Begin by visiting our website.

2nd Question! Your Answer/Comment is Another Opportunity in Our Give Away

We continue in this month of counting blessings and thankfulness with our celebration of Footsteps In Eden Reflexology's 4th Birthday.

From our very beginning, Footsteps In Eden chose to offer you way more than a reflexology "session." Our goal was to offer you an experience of delight for all the senses. We appeal to your sense of smell through the use of aromatherapy. In our case, high quality therapeutic grade essential oils from Young Living.  Did you know that of all of our senses, the sense of smell is the only one where we react first and think about our response later? Something to think about, but not the question for today.

So, the question is, what is your favorite essential oil, how do you use it, and why?

To familiarize yourself with essential oils and their benefits, begin your journey of discovery here.

Cumulative Benefits of Reflexology

How often do you recommend that I schedule my reflexology appointments?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions from clients. You may have asked it yourself. Rather than offer the "one size fits all" answer, here are some reasons for considering the cumulative effect of reflexology for your personal health and wellness goals.

Health challenges are often a part of life for months and even years -- often many years. When clients choose weekly or bi-weekly sessions, and make these a priority over a span of months and in some cases years, they often experience amazing results. (Some sessions may bring nearly indiscernible baby steps. Other times the client is amazed at the dramatic changes.) By allowing their whole being to enter that deep state of relaxation on a regular basis they encourage their whole body toward greater health and wellness for a lifetime.

Sometimes new clients "try" a few sessions over 6 or 8 weeks time expecting to see significant results for their long-term challenges. They become disappointed and choose to stop with reflexology. From experiences in my practice, I know that those with the most awesome stories to share are those who have chosen to continue regular sessions for months and longer, believing that positive changes are occurring within their body. Ultimately, they are most often rewarded with enhanced health and wellness.

New energy patterns are introduced into the body through reflexology. These are helping to bring all systems of the body into greater balance and strengthening the immune system. Consistent regular sessions help to maintain this enhanced state of health. I have some clients who consider regular reflexology to be their "health plan." They report such great benefits that their body knows when it has missed even one session.

Reflexologists do not diagnose or treat for disease. They do not prescribe or adjust medications. Please consult with your medical professional for your health challenges and concerns.

Holiday Stress Reduction Tips -- Reflexology: The Ultimate One

Several years ago I adapted these "Holiday Stress Reduction Tips" from an article by Dr. Dolores Digaetano, which appeared in the MEMPHIS COMMERCIAL APPEAL. Sharing them again here, along with more of my own. Praying at least one or two speak to you that you may find yourself in a more relaxed place throughout the busy days of December.

1. Try a new exercise routine (remember that there is no such thing as inappropriate weather for walking, riding a bike, etc., only inappropriate clothing.)

2. Limit social obligations to people you really like.

3. Spend no more than 1 percent of your annual income on gifts.

4. Pay cash.

5. Give of yourself (volunteer in some capacity).

6. Brighten someone's day.

7. If your current holiday traditions aren't enjoyable to you, then makke new ones.

8. Make a list of your blessings.

9. Spend More time in silence and nature.

10. Wonder

11. Rest

Additional suggestions from Footsteps In Eden Reflexology and Heaven Scent Essentials

12. Massage a few drops of Valor® essential oil blend on the feet each morning and evening. This may bring balance to the body. Add a drop of Joy® essential oil blend over the heart. Inhale deeply of the aromas.

13. Enjoy the treat of a PURE therapeutic grade essential oil bath. Mix several drops of Lavender or Peace & Calming® essential oil with 1/2 cup of epsom salts, baking soda, rock salt, mineral salts (or a combination of the above). Pour under running water as tub is filling. Relax and destress as you breathe in the pure aromas. Your body and your spirit may thank you.

14. Diffuse Peppermint essential oil in your vehicle. Place 2-3 drops on a cotton ball and place in the air vent. This may be quite uplifitng as well as calming in stressful situations like holiday traffic.

15. Keep the therapeutic effects of armatherapy around you all season long. Diffusers of many types are available for home and office. Frankincense, Myrrh, and Christmas Spirit® are all delightful fragrances of the season.

16. Diffusing Thieves® essential oil blend is not only reminiscent of the season because of the cinnamon and clove it contains, but may help to keep you and your family free of the cold and flue bugs circulating during the winter season as well.

17. My Best Suggestion -- :o) -- Give yourself permission to relax. Footsteps In Eden Reflexology offers a wonderful experience in relaxation, encouraging your body to greater health & wellness.

18. Take time to meditate and contemplate the birth of the Savior we celebrate!!!!

Reflexology Special Holiday Offers for November-December 2010

The fast approaching holidays, and the limited time available to be and do all we would like during the months of November and December, have had my mind in a spin. As moms and grandmothers and women in general, we take on the holidays with a vengeance. I'm not sure what we're looking for, except perhaps to recreate a memory or a dream we see in our hearts, and hope to experience too. I'm thinking of the ways to make our dreams realities while keeping our dispositions kind and our hearts loving. Anything less would spoil the effect. You're agreeing about now, right? :o)

Here are a few of my thoughts on destressing the holidays for a happier, healthier, joyful celebration for all:

1. We all have so much. So, do most of those on our gift giving lists. I see so many things I would love to purchase for my children and grandchildren. It's challenging, but one a pray I'm up to: limiting my purchases to one well-chosen gift for each person. Being able to purchase gifts that also benefit a cause makes them even more special.

2. Choosing simpler menus, and planning ahead. Tough one when everyone has their favs and expectations. Spreading the responsibilities among family and friends who will be joining you for the festive meals is a great help too.

3. Finding time for relaxation and destress in the midst of it all. This is so important in order to be at our best and for our bodies to be encouraged to maintain health and wellness.

This last one is so important to me personally because of what I do. Reflexology is such a great way to destress and relax and encourage your body toward greater health and wellness year round. Of course, it is an exceptional gift for yourself during the holidays as well. Our regular sessions are a beautiful experience in relaxation and are 75 minutes long. A fabulous treat (or perhaps a necessity) for yourself.

Time is, of course, at a premium during the holidays. During the months of November and December Footsteps In Eden will be offering some shorter sessions that may be a great fit for you. These are half-hour sessions for $40 each. We'll also offer a package of 2 one-hour sessions for $115. These offers are good only during November and December 2010. The 2 session package must be used by December 31, 2010.

We would love for you to help us bless the St. Jude kids living at Target House here in Memphis. During November and through the first week of December, we'll be collecting NEW GAMES for Santa's deliveries to each of these children. For your donation we will gift you with $5 Off on one single (75 Minute) reflexology session or $10 off the 3 (75 minute each) sessions package. Coupon expires Dec. 31, 2010. The three session package may be purchased and first session used by December 31, 2010 with remaining two sessions scheduled and used by March 15, 2011.

Encouraging Reflexology for Prevention & Wellness

Looking for effective new ways to promote Footsteps In Eden Reflexology. Your suggestions are welcome. What would attract you to make reflexology a part of your regular wellness plan? (Click on above link to learn all about the potential benefits of reflexology, and read the testimonies of others' experiences.)

There is much wisdom in the old proverb: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." We are all finding ourselves in a position of seriously considering the choices we make in spending our hard earned dollars. The health care debate rages on. Wherever you stand on that issue, there are still serious considerations about where the system will leave any of us in our time of health crisis.

Reflexology is so beneficial in bringing balance to all the systems of our body and working holistically (body, mind, and spirit) to encourage our bodies toward health and wellness. Clients who have made reflexology a priority every week or every other week, have reported their continuous state of enhanced well-being. They often tell me how much their body has reminded them of its loss, when they have had to reschedule appointments, and their have 3-4 week or longer intervals between sessions.

What is this contribution to their wellness costing them? Three session packages at Footsteps In Eden are $165. That's a mere $55 per session of reflexology and supreme pampering -- 75 minutes in all. So that comes to $105-$210 per month. I so often hear of those who are spending $500 or more per month on meds (even with insurance). Is this investment in your health today worth potentially less need for the medical intervention and expense of it in the future? I believe it is.

Reflexology for Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)... I'm asked about reflexology for this challenging condition so often....I'm thinking that I've posted about it a while back, too. Today I would like to share an article by one of my favorite fellow reflexologists, Amy Kreydin. You will find some very useful information here that, I pray, will lead you to consider reflexology for RLS if this is a challenge for you. Amy has a knack for getting right to the heart of the challenge, presenting the facts about it, and offering hope through her suggestions about reflexology (and other complementary therapies) that may be helpful as well. To learn more about reflexology's many benefits visit Footsteps In Eden.

Overcoming the Blues

Saturday I bought some beautiful sunflowers and some red flowers of which I'm uncertain of their identity. I'm always delighted with the colorful selection of beauty in Mr. Chandler's flower booth at our local farmers' market. These were no exception. I brought them home and chose to display them in my only blue vase (which is normally in the back of the top cabinet on the top shelf because, as you know, blue is not my favorite color). After all it would make a great post for Blue Monday hosted by Smiling Sally.

Of course, with my passion for wellness and a blog that features suggestions for holistic health and wellness, I had to find a way to bring that in also. Consider these sunflowers would definitely be a sunny and uplifting spot in an otherwise BLUE day. The number of people suffering from the blues to mild or severe depression seems to be growing continuously. Perhaps it is our over committed lifestyles, relationship challenges, poor health, problems with the children, finances -- There are just so many challenges that will steal our joy and even cause an onset of depression in our lives. Where do we turn to combat the blues or worse. As my blog them goes, King Solomon words surely apply here: "Tranquility is life to the body.... (that Scripture finishes with ) stress is rottenness to the bones."

In my reflexology practice I'm saddened by the number of individuals who are finding it necessary to take medications for depression and anxiety. Some of these are some very young adults. While these medications may be helpful they also carry side effects. You hear those listed on every drug advertisement which bombards your senses as they are broadcast straight into your living room. Are there other options? (Please see note below.)

When you are feeling down, is the first place you turn to the Lord? I pray it is so. There is no burden we carry that is too big for Him. Jesus tells us, "Come to me all you are are weak and weary and heavy ladened. Cast your cares upon Me, because I care for you." He'll take care of the worries and stresses that easily take us down when we fret about them and take them on in our own strength. God through nature and human touch has also provided us with some amazing natural resources for improving our lives.

In the photo above you will notice little bottles of essential oils. Allow me to share with you how these may be helpful in cases of blues, depression, anxiety and similar challenges.

*Peace and Calming® -- The oils in this blend (tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli and blue tansy) may help it be effective for dealing with various problems related to the nervous system and emotional balance. This blend of oils is perfect for calming nerves or emotion at the end of a long day or in times of stress. (Apply to navel, feet, back of neck or wear as perfume.)

*Hope(TM) -- The single oils in this blend (melissa, myrrh, juniper and spruce) have the ability to help support the body physically and mentally to give us hope. Those oils when inhaled together may give us the feeling of going forward with hope and achievement. It reconnects us with a feeling of strength and grounding. It may also help relieve depression and suicidal thoughts. (Apply on outer edge of ears, chest, heart, temples, nape of neck feet and wrists. Wear as perfume or cologne.)

*Joy(TM) -- This blend is a beautiful complimentary blend of oils (lemon, mandarin, bergamot, ylang ylang, rose, rosewood, geranium, palmarosa, roman chamomile, and jasmine). When inhaled it brings back memories of being loved, being held, sharing loving times, feeling and opening those blocks in our lives where perhaps we have shut down to love or receiving love or love of self. When there is grief, the adenoids and the adrenal glands shut down; Joy opens these glands. (Rub over heart, ears, neck, thymus, heart chakras, temples, across brown and wrists. Put in bath water, wear as cologne, or put two drops on a wet cloth and put in the dryer for great smelling clothes.)

Also, reflexology is an incredible natural therapy for helping to overcome depression. An article at GoToSee, a complementary therapy website in the UK, presents the case for this so well I won't even begin to describe it here. You are invited to visit their website to learn so much more about the number one benefit of reflexology to reduce stress and bring a sense of tranquility to the body. May I strongly encourage you to take a little side trip to this site especially if you or someone you know suffers regularly from depression, anxiety or just the plain old blues. While there are no guarantees, some of my clients have reduced the amount of medication they are taking after receiving regular reflexology sessions. (Please see note below.) You may also learn more about reflexology at my Footsteps In Eden site.

*The descriptive information on these oils comes from the book, "Reference Guide for Essential Oils" by Connie and Alan Higley. The oils are proprietary blends from Young Living Essential Oils.

PLEASE NOTE: This post is informational only. My reflexology registration with the state of TN is under the department of Health Related Boards. I am in no way advocating that anyone go against physicians' instructions or stop medications. I am not a medical doctor and I do not diagnose, prescribe, or alter medications. That is outside the scope of my practice.

Massage Therapy.com Reports Multiple Benefits of Reflexology

Massage Therapy.com gives thumbs up to reflexology for multiple conditions among them sleep challenges, irritable bowel, depression, constipation, menopause symptoms, and side effects of chemotherapy. All of these reports are supported by research studies on with real people.

These are health challenges that have been faced by many of my clients. Seeing first hand the benefits they have experienced from regular reflexology sessions (1-4 weeks apart), I was most excited to come upon this article and to be able to share it with you. For you or for a friend or loved one struggling in these areas, this article is worth the read.

Looking for a reflexologist...well, if you're in the Memphis, TN area please give me a call. You'll find the number on my Footsteps In Eden website. Other areas of the country, the websites of Reflexology Association of America and the American Reflexology Certification Board contain referral lists by state.

Plantar Fasciitis or Blocked Energy?

"Guess what? I went to see a reflexologist. I didn't have plantar fasciitis at all. I had blocked energy, and my feet are all better now."

A friend and fellow bodywork practitioner shared that one of her clients had been asking what she could do for plantar fasciitis. The clt. had taken a new job where she was on her feet on concrete floors many hours each day. Her feet hurt very badly, she believed it to be plantar fasciitis, and she was looking for a quick fix rather than a modality that would take many sessions to bring her healing.

My friend believed it would take several sessions if it were truly plantar fasciitis -- it probably would have. The above quote was from their follow-up conversation. Why is this being brought up here on Footsteps In Eden's blog?

What's interesting to note is that "plantar fasciitis" has become a real popular word ... quite a buzz about it... great collective condition for any inflammation on the sole of the feet. The plantar surface of the foot is the sole of the foot. Fasciitis is an inflammation usually of some of the structural connective tissue in the foot. So the term "plantar fasciitis" could be used for any type of inflammation on the soles of the feet.

Do we believe we have some magical cure for plantar fasciitis? Not at all. However, regular reflexology sessions do relax the body, improve circulation, and make feet feel wonderful. . . Perhaps reflexology is the perfect way for you to release some of the areas of inflammation and blocked energy in your body and your feet.

In the Memphis, TN area? We would love to serve you at Footsteps In Eden Reflexology.

Foot Map for Reflexology

>

Footsteps In Eden Reflexology features a larger size interactive foot map on our website, but thought it might be fun to share this little widget with you. Discover more about reflexology, a great non-invasive touch therapy which melts stress and encourages health through the feet, above and on our website.
